So, I have been in France forever and I've noticed something... the French really love to use slang! And one of their favorite forms of slang is called "verlan". But, what is verlan? Do the French really use it? In this blog post, I'll answer all those questions and more! :)

Do you know what “verlan” is? It’s a type of French that uses the inverse order of the words. For example, “parler” (to speak) becomes “lerpa”. It can be confusing for students at first, because it feels like you’re speaking an entirely different language! In reality, however, verlan is simply a way of speaking Standard French in a more informal way. And despite what some people may think, the French really do use verlan! So if you want to fit in with the locals while you’re in France, be sure to learn a few phrases in verlan!

Which verbs in French are conjugated with "ĂȘtre" in compound tenses? It's not complicated, the reflexive (pronominal) verbs and a list of 18 verbs (with their derivatives). But be careful, in these 18 verbs, 6 can also be conjugated with "avoir". Let's look at all this in detail...

Earlier this week, we were having a conversation in class about the use of the verb “to be” in French. One of my students made the astute observation that “to be” is not used with the verbs of movement. For example, you would never say “je suis marchĂ©,” but rather “j’ai marchĂ©”.
